Difference Between SDA and SIL Explained (With Examples)

What is SDA and SIL?

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is NDIS funding for purpose-built, accessible housing designed for people with high physical support needs. SDA covers the cost of the home itself, including modifications for mobility, safety, and independence.

Supported Independent Living (SIL), on the other hand, is NDIS funding for the supports and assistance you need to live independently. SIL covers the support workers who help with daily tasks, personal care, household management, skill development, and community participation, but does not cover housing costs

Key Differences Between SDA and SIL

While SDA and SIL often work together, there are important distinctions:

  • Purpose:

    • SDA= provides your physical home environment

    • SIL= provides the care, support and daily assistance you receive

  • Funding:

    • SDA = funds the cost of accessible housing

    • SIL = funds support workers and daily living supports

  • Eligibility:

    • SDA = you must have extreme functional impairments or very high support needs and require a purpose-built home

    • SIL = you must require daily support to live independently, but not necessarily live in SDA

Examples of SDA and SIL in Action

  • SDA Example: You move into a purpose-built home with wheelchair-accessible rooms, wider doorways, and modified bathrooms to support your mobility and independence.

  • SIL Example: You receive 24/7 support from trained staff for cooking, cleaning, medication management, and community outings.

  • Combined Example: Living in an SDA home with SIL supports allows you to attend community activities, manage personal care, and develop daily living skills — showing how both funding types complement each other.

How SDA and SIL Complement Each Other

While SDA focuses on the home, SIL focuses on the supports inside that home. Together, they ensure you:

  • Live in a safe, accessible environment

  • Receive personalised support for daily living

  • Can engage with your community and build independence

  • Have a flexible support plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle
