Global Accessibility Awareness Day: why accessibility matters every day
At More Than Support, accessibility isn’t just a checkbox, it’s a commitment. Today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), we join a global movement to shine a light on the importance of digital access, inclusive spaces, and equal opportunities for people of all abilities.
What is GAAD?
GAAD began with a single idea: to start conversations and raise awareness about digital access and inclusion. It’s now celebrated worldwide, encouraging individuals, organisations, and developers to think more deeply about the experiences of people with disability when they interact with technology and physical environments.
Accessibility in Action
Accessibility is about more than ramps and wide doorways. It’s about ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can navigate the world with confidence, whether that’s reading a website, attending an event, or accessing support services.
At More Than Support, we strive to embody accessibility in every aspect of our work:
Creating easy-to-read policies and documents
Ensuring our support environments are welcoming and adaptable
Listening closely to participants and tailoring services to their needs
Training our staff to identify and eliminate barriers to participation
Why Accessibility Should Be Top of Mind
1 in 6 Australians live with a disability. Accessibility isn't just about helping a few, it’s about creating systems that benefit everyone. When we design with accessibility in mind, we create better experiences for all, from clearer communication to more thoughtful, human-centred design.
What You Can Do
You don’t need to be a tech expert or designer to make a difference. Here are some small ways to promote accessibility:
Use plain language and clear formatting in documents and emails
Add alt-text to images for screen readers
Choose accessible fonts and colours in your presentations
Be patient and inclusive when communicating
Ask for feedback — accessibility starts by listening
Our Ongoing Commitment
At More Than Support, we know that creating an inclusive and accessible world is a shared journey. We’re proud to support participants in achieving greater independence, connection, and confidence, and that means continuously improving how we communicate, deliver services, and advocate for inclusion.
Let’s not make accessibility a one-day conversation. Let’s make it part of how we live, work, and support, every single day.
