The Heart of Care: Alona’s Reflection on Community, Culture, and Compassion

Every culture has its own traditions and practices to demonstrate how we care and support each other through emotional and caregiving language. For that, we open this space to one of our members from Philippines, to share the perspective from her home country, with some heartfelt reflections about what care and support truly mean in her culture—and how these values influence her life and work.

Community and Compassion in My Country

In my country, care and support are woven into the fabric of daily life. Being there for one another isn’t just a gesture—it’s a way of life. Neighbours often lend a helping hand without being asked, whether it’s cooking a meal, checking in to see how someone is doing, or simply sharing a moment of company. Family is at the core of everything, and even friends and neighbours are embraced like family. This culture of kindness manifests in actions, especially during difficult times, reminding us that we are never truly alone.

Lessons from My Roots

Growing up, I learned an important lesson: helping others should come from the heart, without expecting anything in return. It’s about genuine kindness. My parents instilled these values in me—values that continue to guide my work as a support worker today. I believe that passing on kindness creates a ripple effect, inspiring others to do the same and strengthening the bonds that hold our communities together.

Inclusion Through Everyday Acts

Inclusion is a vital part of my culture, expressed through everyday acts of care and respect. Whether it’s ensuring that people with disabilities are welcomed at community events or advocating for equal job opportunities, the principles of respect and fairness are fundamental. These small acts reflect a society that values every individual and strives to create an environment where everyone feels valued and included.

Celebrating Our Heritage and Unity

Every June, we celebrate Philippine Independence Day—a day filled with parades, gatherings, and delicious food. It’s a special time that reconnects me with my roots, even as I live away from the Philippines. It serves as a reminder of our shared history and the collective effort of our heroes who fought for our freedom. More than that, it’s a celebration of the enduring spirit of unity and support among Filipinos. That same spirit continues to thrive in us today, inspiring us to support one another through kindness and solidarity.

At the heart of my culture is a simple yet powerful truth: care, support, and kindness are what hold communities together. Whether through everyday acts of inclusion or celebrating our shared heritage, these values shape my life and my work. I believe that by embracing and sharing these principles, we can create a more compassionate and connected world.
