Strength, Voice and Choice: Celebrating the International Day of People with Disability at MTS
Every year on 3 December, the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) invites communities, organisations, and individuals across Australia to celebrate diversity and challenge the misconceptions that still surround disability. For MTS, this day is more than an annual event—it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to providing high-quality NDIS support services that empower people with disability to live with independence, dignity, and equal opportunity.
As a team, we work every day to reduce stigma, remove barriers, and support people to participate fully in their communities. IDPwD provides a moment to highlight these efforts and to acknowledge the strength, resilience, and talents of the people we are privileged to support.
Championing Independence Through Personalised NDIS Support Services
Independence looks different for every person. For some, it means learning daily living skills. For others, it’s about building confidence to make decisions, strengthening social connections, or navigating their local community safely.
At MTS, independence is not defined by what a person can or cannot do—it is defined by what matters to them. Our NDIS support services are designed around participants’ goals, preferences, and lived experience.
Our disability support workers take the time to ensure that every participant feels heard, respected, and capable of leading their own journey. Whether we are assisting someone to attend appointments, strengthening daily living skills, encouraging community engagement, or supporting meaningful relationships, the focus remains the same: choice and control.
Breaking Down Stigma—Together
Despite progress in disability inclusion in Australia, people with disability still face misconceptions, stereotyping, and social barriers. IDPwD reminds us that creating a truly inclusive community requires ongoing work from all of us.
MTS is committed not only to supporting participants but also to actively reducing disability stigma. Through education, representation, and respectful communication, we work to challenge assumptions and foster understanding in everyday environments.
Encouraging open conversations—within families, workplaces, schools, and community groups—is a powerful part of this change. Every moment of understanding moves us closer to a society built on empathy and equality.
Our Team: At the Heart of Our Mission
The commitment of the MTS team is at the core of the support we provide. Our workers show up with compassion, professionalism, and genuine dedication every day. They take time to understand participants’ needs, adapt to challenges, and celebrate achievements—big and small.
Their work is more than practical assistance. It’s advocacy. It’s connection. It’s trust.
Their continued commitment is central to the disability inclusion movement in Australia, and we are proud to recognise their contribution this IDPwD.
*A Story of Strength: Meet Sophia
(Name changed for privacy)**
Sophia has been with MTS for the past two years, bringing with her a powerful story of resilience, determination, and growth. After experiencing an acquired brain injury, Sophia faced significant challenges with her speech, coordination, and overall mobility. Everyday tasks felt uncertain, and communicating her needs and feelings was often overwhelming.
From the beginning, Sophia’s journey was supported by a strong network: her dedicated MTS support workers, her allied health team—including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy—and her family. Together, they built a coordinated plan focused on one goal: helping Sophia regain independence and confidence in her daily life.
Progress came step by step. Through consistent speech therapy, daily communication practice with her support workers, and encouragement to use her voice in safe environments, Sophia began to see changes. Words that once felt difficult slowly became easier to express. Her confidence speaking with others grew, and her personality began shining through again.
Alongside her improvements in speech, Sophia worked tirelessly on mobility. With support from MTS workers and guidance from her therapists, she participated in daily activities designed to build strength and coordination. These included community walks, home-based exercises, and meaningful outings that kept her both active and socially connected.
One of the most inspiring parts of Sophia’s journey has been her participation in family getaways and community outings. Activities that once felt too challenging became moments of joy, connection, and growth. These experiences not only boosted her physical mobility but also reinforced her sense of belonging and independence.
Today, Sophia continues to make remarkable progress. Her speech has improved significantly, her mobility has strengthened, and she approaches each new goal with determination. Her story reflects the impact of true collaboration—between support workers, allied health professionals, and a loving family—and demonstrates what is possible when a person is supported with understanding, consistency, and respect.
Sophia’s journey is a powerful example of disability stories in Australia—stories that celebrate strength, commitment, and the belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.
Moving Forward Together
As we recognise IDPwD, we are reminded that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility. Small, everyday actions—listening without judgment, using respectful language, offering access, and valuing each person’s strengths—create the foundation of a more inclusive society.
MTS remains committed to walking alongside participants, families, carers, and the wider community as we advocate for equality and celebrate diversity.
This day is an opportunity to reflect, to learn, and to continue building a world where all people—regardless of ability—can thrive.
If you or someone you support is looking for personalised, respectful, and empowering NDIS support services, we’re here to help.
Contact MTS today to learn how we can work together to build independence, reduce barriers, and create meaningful opportunities.
